Xiyou Linux Group is an interest group of computer science department at Xi'an Institute of Post and Telecommunications[1], it was founded by our instructor Wang Yagang in September 2006. About 260 students have joined our group, now there are about eighty members can take activities normally.
One of our instructors Chen Lijun has translated many classic foreign books on linux kernel, such as Understanding the linux kernel, Linux kernel development, Linux kernel development, and so on.
Every term some students of our institute joined us,and study how to use linux and some knowledge about opensource software. When they master the basic knowledge, they can choose a right project to improve their ability to development. Our activities include developing linux applications, analyzing linux kernel, linux server configuration, and so on. We have our own website including blog, maillist, wiki, projects, and so on. There are also some activities held for more communicating with other lovers. For example, Software Freedom Day 2007(Xi'an), Herbert Xu 's technology speech on kernel, Mandriva InstallParty, and so on. We also take part in some important activities, such as, Linux World 2007(Beijing), RedFlag Cup Open Source Knowledge Competition. Many of our projects were hosted on Sourceforge[2], so that anyone can join in. All of them are free software (free as in freedom) and published under GPL.
What projects have we done?
XylFTP: It includes server and client applications, which follows standard File Transfer Protocol. Server was developed with GNU C, client was developed with Java. Last year, this project received Excellence Awards.
XyBACKUP: It was developed with Bash Shell Script, it can improve our ability of using shell commands to management system.
Some members also developed Java games on mobile phone, and do some exercises of server configuration. After studying, we also contribute to some free software communities, e.g.Zeuux[3] Project and zh-kernel[4], Kernel Travel[5]. Wang Cong [6], one of our member, have sent more than 20 patches to kernel mail list.
What are we doing now?
Pigeons: This is a software for transfer files over Lan,even Internet. By using some clever tricks, we want to make the speed of transferring files faster than other similar tools, such as QQ.
