We are consolidating all our web infrastructure on the Moin platform to ease the administration and make it easier for more people to contribute. Pages and galleries will be moved across, but some further cleaning up of the markup will be required.
Spam and Stability issues
The old MediaWiki-based wiki was increasingly falling victim to spam on its pages. I've now had experience administrating serveral WediaWiki and MoinMoin wikis and the later do npt seem to have tis problem. That may be due to the larger number of MediaWiki deployments.
MediaWiki uses a MySQL database and the PHP scripting language, both of which may develop security problems. The solution to that is usually to upgrade the wiki engine. However, with a database there is always a risk of data corruption during upgrades. Moin uses flat files and so does not have this problem. The Mambo system running the main site was having similar PHP/database security problems.
TheOpenCD site was also migrated to a Moin system recently and this page contanins a longer explanation written at the time.
Consolidation
We are taking the opportunity during the wiki migration to merge 3 different systems -- wiki, web portal and gallery -- together onto one single system. That should make it easier for members of the community to edit pages, upload pictures, etc.
Register to edit
To edit pages on the new site you need to register a new account at UserPreferences. Once registered, you can edit web pages, wiki pages and galleries.
