Snow College Freedom Team
The Snow College Freedom Team is a group of students and community members bringing Software Freedom Day to the Snow College campus in Ephraim, UT, USA.
Date
We will celebrate Software Freedom Day on September 14. This is because September 15 falls on a Saturday this year, and most students at Snow College leave town during weekends.

Events
For this year's celebration, we have many enticing events planned!
As food is always a powerful attractor, we will have some light snacks available for revelers. Currently the plan calls for at least hot dogs boiled in water (which are quick to prepare) with appropriate condiments, and cold water to drink.
Large placards, banners, sidewalk chalk designs, and flyers will generate interest in the days leading up to the celebration. Each successive day will see more and more of these promotional items created and posted about the campus.
Team leaders will wear the SFD shirts and help to enthuse and encourage team members and the public. Possibilities call for chants, cheers, and songs.
An interactive exhibit will be established in either the Computer Lab of the Lucy A. Phillips Library or in the Student Writing Lab. Here several computers will be running Ubuntu Linux to demonstrate the power and freedom that Ubuntu, and the software which it runs, provide together. Volunteers will help assist and manage the exhibit. Knowledgeable volunteers will assist and have a scheduling sheet available for those members of the public who are interested in installing Ubuntu on their own computers.
Promotional materials will include prominent displays of the software which will be used and distributed, including Ubuntu, Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org, and others. Pending permission, volunteers will install the latest version of Mozilla Firefox and some promotional desktop wallpapers upon all of the student-accessible computers in the Library and Writing Lab.
Brainstorming
Some ideas for the Ubuntu exhibit:
- Have volunteers log onto their IM (instant messaging) accounts and have a live text chat during the exhibit demonstrations.
- Have volunteers log onto Ekiga accounts and have a live voice chat during the exhibit demonstrations.
Demonstrate cool Firefox extensions, such as AdBlock, ColorTabs, et cetera.
- Install 3D drivers and enable Desktop Effects (A.K.A. compositing effects like transparencies and wobbly windows).
- Have the music students play some jazz as open source music
- Create some Creative Commons music collections and make them available for download from the Ubuntu machines
Other ideas:
- Play Creative Commons music to attract eyes and ears to the booths and exhibits
- It is important to show that Linux runs on "Windows computers" and "Macintosh computers" equally well
