FOSS USM is a group of faculty, staff and students of the University of Southern Mindanao who practice and advocate the use of Free and Open Source Software in the university. The group also extend their service in the province with the support of the ICT Council (North Cotabato Province).

The Central Mindanao Computer School (CMCS) together with University of Southern Mindanao (USM) are joining the rest of the world in celebrating the Software Freedom Day 2009 dubbed as "FOSS...Breaking Free!Introductory to GNU/LINUX and FOSS Application" at Jennies Club House on September 19, 2009 7:30AM to 11:30AM.

The Event Report: Software Freedom Day 2009

The 2009 Software Freedom Day was successfully held at Jennies Club House, Mlang, Cotabato from 7:00am to 11:30am. The Central Mindanao Computer School, Inc. together with the University of Southern Mindanao were the event's organizers. It was offered with 50 pesos registration that covers one (1) snack and certificate. It was participated in by 85 students from secondary and tertiary level of different schools from Kabacan, Mlang, and Tulunan. Twenty five (25) professionals from various agencies and schools in the province of Cotabato also attended the celebration.

The occasion was highlighted with an opening program which President Dr. Jonathan F. Abasques of Central Mindanao Computer School, Inc. gave his welcome message to the participants, followed by the overview on the essence of Software Freedom Day by Mr. Eugene G. Ranjo, team leader, foss_usm.

In the activity proper, there were presentations of FOSS Application such as: a) Ubuntu Desktop by Mr. Eugene G. Ranjo, b) OpenOffice.org by Engr. Chrislam S. Mantawil, c) GIMP by Engr. Renel M. Alucilja, d) Ruby on Rails by Mr. Alvin C. Mibalo, and e) Virtualization by Mr. Calvin E. Roquero.

In order to make the event more exciting, raffle were drawn from the participants where 30 button pins served as prices. More goodies were also given to the participants such as: Ubuntu CDs, Ubuntu stickers, OpenEducationDics and certificates as well.

The celebration has two level of audience, the upper and lower deck. We used 2 LCD projectors for simultaneous projection of the presentations done in the lower deck. The said celebration would not be successful without the support from the event sponsors which comprises of the following: the KidapawanExchange.com; and Metro Kidapawan Telephone Corporation.
