Software Freedom Day - Dundee 2009
After hosting a riproaring event last year the UAD Linux Society and Tayside Linux User Group are proud to host another event for Software Freedom Day 2009
Last years event was not only the biggest celebration of Free Software in Scotland, but also in the UK! Join us this year in our celebration of Software Freedom in what promises to be an even better event than before!

The schedule for talks this year is:
ArronFinnon : What is free software, and why software freedom is important (10:15am)
- The aim of this talk is to help in distinguishing what is free software, and helps people understand the definitions of free software and its differences between its counterparts. Free software doesn't always mean without cost, its free as in freedom. The talk aims to highlight the importance of why freedom in software is important to everyone's day to day life.
RickMoynihan : Freedom & Control (10:45am)
- In this powerful, visual talk Rick looks at the duality between Freedom and Control and how governments and corporations use technology to maximise control over us. The stakes are now higher than ever as the Internet and modern communications technology represent both technological salvation and slavery. Rick looks at what we can do to free ourselves from proprietary control and emancipate ourselves from the shackles of proprietary controlling technologies.
RobertMcWilliam : Free and Open Source Software for Windows (11.15am)
- A tour of the Free and Open Source Software available for Windows. Highlights to include Firefox, Open Office, The GIMP, Blender, Inkscape, VLC, cygwin, virtualbox...
HazelMcKendrick : Free and Open Source Software for Students (11:45am)
- An overview of how Open Source software can benefit students. This talk will consider a range of applications for both Windows and Linux, particularly focussing on time management software and the essentials for students no matter what they are studying.
RobertLadyman : Open Source and Business (12:15pm)
- The talk covers why open-source is important and useful for businesses; where you already use it without knowing that you do; how you can choose the best and most useful packages for your business; using open-source as a bargaining tool.
ArronFinnon : Podcasting 101, from mic to audience. (1:35pm)
- The aim of the talk is help educate the audience in what is a podcast and where are good places to find podcasts. It also aims to discuss how people can record, produce and publish their own podcast on little or no budget. There are plans to have a practical demonstrations throughout the day.
NickWalker : Open source Security (2:00pm)
- My talk will be about open source software, and how being open source benefits security, bug detection and fixing, and compare this to the views and ideas of people who are of the opinion that closed source is better for security.
KrisFindlay : SSH (Secure SHell) The Beginners Guide (2:30pm)
- SSH also known as Secure Shell, allows people to securely transfer files in many ingenious way. It also allows control of remote machines whereby remote applications can be run locally and can also secure your internet while using wifi hotspots. SSH can securely mount a directory on a remote server as a file system on a computer to be used locally. In this talk I will be explaining some of the different uses of SSH and will give some great examples of how SSH can be used.
GaryWhitton : Building Games With Blender (3:00pm)
- My talk will start with a brief intro to blender describing what it does and how it can be used to make games. I'm hoping to have a small demonstration of some of basic game making as it might be possible (I'll decide a bit nearer the time) if not I'll make some examples and state how long they took to construct.
PhilippGeyer : Games and the Open Source Community (3:30pm)
- This talk will encorporate the gaming aspect of the open source community. This will include playing games on Open Source platforms and Open Source games under non-free environments too, both aspects are often overlooked and underrated. Aditionally covered, will be the creation of games using Open Source software, from things as simple as a text editor through Open Source compilers and on to full scale game engines and open platforms such as the GP2X.
AndrzejHajto : VoIP and Open Source - A look at H.323 (4:00pm)
- My talk will present H.323 VoIP standard and its open source implementation like GnuGK open source gatekeeper. It will also present H.323 (in)security aspects.

GordonDunlop : Virtualisation Demonstration
- Virtualisation is a process whereby different operating systems can be run concurrently on a computer. This technology can be used on Enterprise/Server/Desktop/Laptop systems irrespective of operating system so that the computer hardware is used to its full potential. Gordon will demonstrate the use of free and open source virtualisation software within the Fedora 11 operating system, this software can also be used within other operating systems. The benefits of open source virtualisation are server consolidation, power savings, full use of hardware, security isolation, flexibility in the choice of operating system and what applications a user wants to run, testing and development.

Software Freedom Day - Dundee 2008
Our event last year was the biggest event of its kind in the UK, as we ran a day packed full of over 15 talks on a wide range of topics, along with comprehensive demonstrations of free and open source software.
With a diversity of topics ranging from the philosophy behind 'Free(dom)' and open communities to sessions on virtualisation and first hand experiences of free software adoption last years event was a great success. Many of our attendees enjoyed not only the lectures but also practical, interactive demonstrations of free and open source software on display during the event.
