The agenda of Software Freedom Day in Gdansk, 19 September 2009:
1)Placement of informational boards, promoting Free Software.
Contents:
- a) an explanation, what is Free Software
- b) statistics of its use in Europe and in the world (e.g. information that most of german offices use Linux) and a list of major companies using Free Software
- c) main Free Software products like:
- - Firefox
- - Thunderbird
- - Pidgin
- - 7-Zip
name, logo, facts about each of them and a screenshot.
Knowledge of informations on the boards will be required to take part in competitions.
2) Placement of a projector, displaying continuously slides about Free Software. Also, if we get a permission from the shopping center, an advertisement of SFD on a telebeam.
3) Preparation of several computers (5-6), where anyone interested will be able to check for themselves, how easy and comfortable it is to use Free Software. We will present the capabilities of:
- a) GNU/Linux System (mainly Ubuntu)
- b) Firefox browser
- c) Thunderbird
d) OpenOffice suite
- e) a selection of media players available on FLOSS licenses
- f) instant messengers (Pidgin, Kadu)
- g) programs for image creation and processing (Gimp, Inkscape)
and also, presentations how to easily:
- h) copy photos from a digital camera
- i) load music into an external mp3 player
- j) use Torrents to download Free Software
also demonstrations of:
- k) a few games on Linux
- l) educational applications for children
- m) Octave - for students, but not only
We are also preparing a presentation about XMPP/Jabber protocol.
4) Competitions: their aim is to create positive associations with Free Software, but also encourage learning about it. We anticipate the following competitions:
- Knowledge about software described on informational boards.
- Practical use of Open Source tools (simple tasks like configuring a web browser or text editing, the faster, the better)
- For children: throwing a toy penguin at targets, drawing logos of chosen Open Source programs. All young competitors get prizes.
