ILUG-CALINFO
ILUG-CALINFO is the Kolkata team organized by ILUG-CAL.INFO (a Linux users group) for Software Freedom Day.
The Kolkata team is by no means restricted to the LUG and anybody interested in software freedom is free to join us for the event. We have been actively involved in FOSS activities for a number of years.
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: SFD'2009
Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). This year it is on the 19th day of September. But due to unavoidable reasons we will be celebrating it on the 15th of September. Our goal in this celebration is to educate the worldwide public about of the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business -- in short, everywhere! The non-profit company Software Freedom International coordinates SFD at a global level, providing support, giveaways and a point of collaboration, but volunteer teams around the world organize the local SFD events to impact their own communities.
Open Source Software give users the freedom to run the software program for any purpose, to study and modify the source code of software program, and to redistribute copies of either the original or modified program and without having to pay royalties to previous developers. Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), in addition requires minimization of cost for end users.
The FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) Movement has evolved from the stages of philosophy and licensing into a complex and pragmatic Ecosystem for software production and distribution benefiting humanity globally. FOSS has introduced technological self-reliance, efficient use and sharing of resources, collaborative innovation and development providing new directions to development at the local level. This gives humanity the freedoms of choice and empowerment encouraging development of a local industry and skills that result in immense financial benefits for both developing and developed countries.
ILUG-CALINFO: THE KOLKATA TEAM
The Kolkata Chapter (INFO) of the Indian Linux Users Group (ILUG-CALINFO), has been committed to the cause of FOSS, OSS and promotion of FOSS since its inception. As the Kolkata team for the SFD has been coordinated by the user group members, we decided to name the team after the group. Those who are with the vision and objectives of SFD and FOSS are welcome to join us.
