Publicity announcement (English)
You are invited to join the first celebration of Software Freedom Day in Sudbury on Saturday, September 20th in the Instruction Room at the J.N. Desmarais Library.
Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). The goal of the day is to educate the worldwide public about of the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business -- in short, everywhere!
As defined by the Free Software Foundation, "Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software." (http://www.fsf.org/licensing/essays/free-sw.html).
The event begins at 12:00 pm with with an opening keynote by Dr. Rachel Ellaway, Assistant Dean Education Informatics at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, on the relationship between open source and open learning. Dr. Ellaway is an active researcher in the field of learning technology and is the project administrator for the OpenLabyrinth virtual patient system open source project.
At 1:00 pm, Dr. Rick Danielson, Full Professor at the School of Human Kinetics, will discuss his use of Moodle - a free, open source course management system for online learning. Dr. Danielson originally pioneered the use of WebCT at Laurentian, so he has clear insight into the strengths and weaknesses of course management systems.
At 2:00 pm, Robert Maynard, MIRARCO, will talk about his work developing ParaViewGeo, an open source visualization and data integration tool for mining and geology.
At 2:45 pm, Dan Scott, Assistant Librarian at the J.N. Desmarais Library, will introduce Project Conifer, a collaboration between Algoma University, Laurentian University, McMaster University, and the University of Windsor to bring the Evergreen open source library system to Ontario university libraries.
At 3:15 pm, Dan Scott will discuss ways in which the J.N. Desmarais Library and its users are already benefiting from free software. He will also demonstrate how to enrich your research process with the LibX and Zotero browser extensions.
Special note: the first 50 attendees will receive a CD of free software - but we only have 50 CDs and 50 seats, so be sure to come early!
