Software Freedom Day, Team Christchurch

18 September 2009

Software Freedom Day 2009 is this Saturday, 19 September. The international festival of free and open-source software (FOSS) is in its fifth year, and of celebration locally.

A computer user workshop and displays will run from 10am to 4pm at the South Learning Centre, South Christchurch Library in Beckenham.

The event presents an opportunity for people to explore the functionality and enjoyment of a large range of FOSS, like the Ubuntu GNU/Linux operating system, Open Office suite, Firefox web browser, the GNU Image Manipulation Program for graphics, utilities, science tools, games, and much more.

FOSS derives from the UNIX computer culture, dating back to 1970s aerospace innovation and renowned for its stable and secure design. FOSS strength comes from its global development community, leveraging education traditions of knowledge sharing still important today.

Take-home CDs are made available, with installation advice.

Movies to be shown: Revolution O/S; The Code; Codebreakers.

All are most welcome to attend.

SFD Team Christchurch 08, Aotearoa / New Zealand

Hi all. Welcome to the SFD Team Christchurch page for 2008 - SFD8.

We are probably the only SFD team in the world to be completing our 8th Software Freedom Day event, in 2008 ("unique" status - we began with the 1st SFD in 2004 - an open invite for more Cantabrians to join in the fun). But other teams are catching up fast, with one running "Software Freedom Week" this year and a "Software Freedom Tour" also underway!

We can show newcomers what Free and Open-Source Software, and the GNU/Linux operating system, are all about. Take a free installation CD home with you from this workshop. Part of http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/teams/oceania/nz

SFD teleconference

Since moving to our current SFD venue in 2006, based around a modern computer lab, Team Christchurch has been exploring the possibilities of a teleconferenced SFD link. This would connect New Zealand SFD teams - in a lead timezone - with the rest of the SFD world, and provide live online content and increased shared activity for this amazing international event. Project progress thus far:

Teleconferencing facility is available at our SFD venue, but to use it we need to exchange an IP address name and number with anyone wanting to dial us up. Similarly, we could dial out. Incoming calls would cost us $15 per hour, and outgoing $75 per hour. We need to arrange a test connection before SFD too, for the Library to facilitate that on our Day. We are now fundraising towards this live connection service.

So, do any SFD teams out there have a set teleconference IP address name and number for their SFD venue, ready to exchange? If so, please forward these to sfdATinfohelpDOTcoDOTnz and we'll be able to connect up live by SFD9.

Cheers, Rik
