Team Canberra
This year we are organising two events in relation to Software Freedom Day:
Software Freedom Day - 19th September
Saturday September 19, 10am to 2pm.
On the day we will be running a stand at the Computer Fair at the '''Old Bus Depot Markets''' in Kingston as we have in previous years. We will be giving away OpenDisc and Ubuntu CDs, providing machines running Linux for people to use, and running various demonstrations of open source games, MythTV and other applications. We will also provide ISO images of OpenDisc, Ubuntu 8.04 and Fedora 9 for people to copy direct to their USB keys.
Attendees to Software Freedom Day will be invited to attend a followup Installfest and following weekend. More information below.
People who have volunteered to come:

300 OpenDisc SFD edition CDs to give away courtesy of Linux Australia.

- Leaflets to give away with each CD with details about the Installfest.
- 3x Power boards
- 5x Network cables

What we want to supply:
- Power boards

- General machine that people can play with - surf the web, look at files, navigate around with.
- MythTV backend/frontend with some recordings and maybe some games set up.
- Laptop
- Older machine running e.g. Puppy Linux
- The first machine might also have ISOs of popular distros, CD/DVD burner and other stuff for people to copy onto USB keys.
- Flyers talking about:
- What is Linux and FOSS
- The CLUG and how to get to a meeting
- FOSS for teachers / professionals / 'working families'
- Open Source games and gaming
Installfest - 26th September
This will be held on Saturday 26th September in room N101 of the CSIT Building, ANU from 10am to 3pm.
Interested members of the public are invited to bring their own computers along and get help from CLUG members, to install Linux and other Open Source Software. This provides a better opportunity for people who are interested in getting into FOSS to do so in a comfortable and helpful environment and is a new feature of SFD Canberra Plans.
We will also be running an information seminar, workshop and probably something for politicians and public servants (seeing Canberra is a Government town). We are still finalising the details of this side of our event planning and will post them here soon.
- Flyers will advertise the Installfest with a map and details of what to bring. These can be given out in the lead-up to Software Freedom Day as well as at the event.
- On the day, we will have signs and balloons directing people to the Installfest to make it easy to find.
- When people arrive, they will be supplied with:
- Labels to write their name on for themselves and to identify their gear to avoid confusion.
- A form to fill out specifying what their computer configuration is and what they would like done.
- A form indemnifying helpers and other 'staff' and stating that this is a 'best effort' volunteer effort.
- The person at the door will direct them to a table to set up, preferably with a helper.
- The helper then tries to guide the person through as much of the install process as possible.
There will be tea, coffee and a selection of snacks available at reasonable cost during the day. Sausages for lunch are also planned.
We anticipate two types of people at the Installfest:
- People who already know how to install Linux and are just taking advantage of the facilities.
- People who need assistance with installing and learning about Linux and FOSS.
We need:
- Lots of power cables and power boards (Steve Hanley has these)
- Network cables.
- 24-port switch
- Server for NATting, DHCP, caching, and other uses.
- Connection to the ANU LAN for access to mirror.linux.org.au and mirror.aarnet.edu.au
- Machines demonstrating various aspects of Linux:
- MythTV server and front end
- Older machine running Puppy Linux
The chief question still in my head is:
- How many people will actually turn up?
