Belize Celebrates Software Freedom Day 2007

In Belize this year we celebrated Software Freedom Day by renting a booth at a national expo that falls on the same day as our event. There were hundreds and hundreds of people at this event in the largest city in Belize, but our target audience was much smaller. Our "Software Freedom Day" banner attracted just the right people to step into our booth.

We had computers set up to show the Mark Shuttleworth SFD Interview, to demonstrate free software applications, and to showcase how the Linux Terminal Server Project works. LTSP is used by Corozal Community College and Corozal Junior College, which provided major support for SFD. We gave away the 50 Ubuntu CDs we received, and TheOpenCDs. A sign out front told what Free Software meant, and many stopped to read it as they passed.

We obtained names and email addresses for people interested in training and workshops related to the use of free software, such as Linux Server Administration training, which generated a great deal of interest. We are now planning such training, to be offered by Linux.bz, the main sponsor of Belize's Software Freedom Day activities.

There is already activity on the forums now at linux.bz.
