INTRODUCTION kaflug is the only rural based linux group in nigeria, pioneered by fantsuam foundation kafanchan, charged with the responsibility of taking FOSS down to the rural communities. we have been part of SFD celebrations since 2004. however, this year celebration was the most successful. we had forty-eight people in attendance .that was phenomena by the rural standard , where most people do not know or have not seen a computer before. we were able to attract the attention of the government through the visit, to the SFD celebration, of one of the system administrators- from the corporate affairs headquarters in Abuja. he was very excited about the level of work and the quality of our presentation, despite the limited resources in the rural community.
ACTIVITIES the celebration started at 10:00 am with the welcoming of the participants by mr julius m. billy. he also gave a brief introduction to what FOSS is and the aim of the SFD celebration. the program of the day was broken into sessions : 1. a talk by the guest speaker on the topic: THE FUTURE WITH FOSS. 2.practical session where participants used the linux operating system ( ubuntu) to perform some basic tasks. During this breakout sessions participants were broken into small groups of about eight people per group,with a facilitator assigned to each group. Different demostration of linux was done like, creating a document in linux and saving for viewing in windows, converting files, Using open office, Gimp instant messaging tool, browsers, emailing with linux and other basic task based on participants interest. It was a very exiting event for all participants as they learn that Foss Software can be freely shared and downloadable from the internet. Not to mention that they can do all their task on a linux machine without fear of virus infection. in addition, to the excitement, they all when home with a copy of ubuntu CD.
The question and answer session that followed gave the participants the opprtunity to ask all the questions on foss and what it stands for. the celebration came to an end with a closing remark, followed with a group picture with some of the participants.
TESTIMONIAL.. As i got to the venue of the event with the bad road and rural setting i was wondering what i was going to meet. Getting closer my expectations began go drop. I came out of my car and left my camera in the car believing there was going to be not much that will be deserving of a pin hole look.
when i came out, my first shock was the reception then i went into the plenary session it was a wonderful presetations i saw. The infrastructure available in such a remote place was simply amazing. I had to run to my car to get my Camara out. Even in the city of Abuja where i am located, the quality of Resource people i saw are lacking in most training centers.
It was a real suprise and wonderful experience for me.
