Software freedom day [SFD] is the worldwide celebration of free and open source software [FOSS]. http://www.sonatech.ac.in/sonalug
- The main goal of the celebration is to educate the students about the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home and in business – in short everywhere.
- SFD was celebrated for the second time in Sona College of Technology, Salem on 16th September which was sponsored by FEDORA. The day was a global, grass roots effort to educate the students about the virtues and availability of free and open source software. The day started with a FOSS song, which was specially composed by Sona Linux User Group (SONA LUG) team. The chief guests of the day were Dr.C.N.Krishnan, Director,AU-KBC, NRCFOSS and Mr.B.R.Anand,Manager-Learning Services(south),RED HAT.Dr.C.N.Krishnan presided over the function and the inauguration of LINUX Software Exhibition was done by him.
He pointed out that “Anna University” is the first educational institution in Asia to include FOSS in curriculum. He also mentioned about the benefits and booming job openings for LINUX.
Mr.B.R.Anand gave a lecture on career with Linux. He said about the REDHAT Linux Certifications, which would be very useful to students and job seekers. He insisted to take up Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification. He also visited the RED HAT Lab in Sona College.
- On the eve of software freedom day a software exhibit of various FOSS software of all engineering discipline equivalent to proprietary softwares were displayed. The exhibit contained about 50 softwares.Students from 12 schools and 13 colleges eagerly visited them. People from industries also visited. SONALUG, a Linux user group in sona conducted various events like quiz program based on Linux, a competition on commands in Linux etc. Winners of various events were awarded with cash prize and certificates. Free Live CDs were distributed to the visitors. A reference manual, which includes various essential linux commands, was also distributed to them. SONALUG, Department of Information Technology along with FOSS team took great initiatives to make the programme a grand success. They observed that it created an awarness among the school students. Also the college students can update their knowledge by knowing various soft wares in LINUX . This program was an eye opener for the students to know about the open source.Mr.B.R.Anand gave the feedback that it was an amazing exhibition. He also added that it was a good initiative towards the open source revolution. The students found this program to be a useful one and they said that the soft wares displayed were very useful and interesting.
