Team CHENNAI, TAMIL NADU

SFD 2006

Dear FOSSians,

Last year's success with Software Freedom Day, by having a Linux Demo Day and displaying the advantages of Free/Open Source Software to the public, have made us to plan for putting up a bigger public display of the FOSS Community this year. ILUGC has been very active in this one year time, with a lot of Seminars and Linux Demo Days, that we now have a voluminous community. We dare to display the strength of the community this year by organizing a Freedom Walk. Participants of this walk wil be members from our Linux User Group Chennai, and Students and Faculties from various Engineering colleges in/around chennai.

The main idea behind this Freedom Walk is to make the general public aware of FOSS and its advantages. We expetct atleast around 300 people to participate in this walk. We also plan to conduct special seminars in various educational institutions in our region. Hope, with every year we can create more awareness about FOSS. We are open to ideas and comments, which will help us organize more effective events for the Software Freedom Day 2006 :)

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Warm Greetings. In our area , people using computers are unaware about the implications of computer software usage in their business activity. A large segment of people who buy hardware, doesn't care about the legitimacy of the software, as the Machine integrators(those who build the machines) keep them in dark. For instance a popular PC based operating system is installed and a typical pc hardware might cost Rs 14000/- (Indian Rupees). This amount only constitutes the hardware price, where as the software is installed as a pirated version. We are willing to do an evangelist job of saying the importances of copyrights policy, trademark norms. We want our people to adhere it if they might uses it. That is the part we want to talk for the have's, for Have nots we want to tell the importance of FOSS - FREE OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE, the excellence of FOSS, the legitimacy of using FOSS and be a clean citizen, instead of being a pirated software users. So this made us to join in the movement of SFD (SOFTWARE FREEDOM DAY).

We are planning to invite school childrens and organise a JAM & WORKSHOP on FOSS. From now on we want to take this venture to House hold computer users, SME, SOHOs talking to them on the importance and the excellence of FOSS.We are planning to keep demos on topics like Astronomy where we would like to exhibit STELLARIUM (http://stellarium.free.fr) and Celestia (http://shatters.net). Similarly We want to exhibit various FOSS for different branch of studies, This might be from exhibiting GNUCash (http://www.gnucash.org) for accountants, GIMP (http://www.gimp.org) for DTP guys, SUGARCRM (http://www.sugarcrm.com) for SMEs/SOHO to keep track of their clients, and our imagination is always on and we do invite ideas from any person who might add flavours to the cause of SOFTWARE FREEDOM.

I am encouraged by my forum members of CHENNAI LINUX USER GROUP (http://www.chennailug.org) and for this year SFD we are celebrating it at TAMIL NADU SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGICAL CENTRE KOTTURPURAM BIRLA PLANETARIUM COMPLEX as a CHENNAI LINUX USER GROUP's activity.
