Vernal, UT, U.S.A. [edit] Locations and Events [edit] Cobblerock Park
Located at Main St and Vernal Ave
1:00 P.M. - 2:00 P.M.
We will start FSD at this location. We will have a stand which will consist of a table supporting a Linux laptop, the Software Freedom Packs, the Literature Packs, and a Software Freedom Day banner.
The laptop will demonstrate a Linux system for the public to interact with. Currently it is undecided if we will be running Knoppix live or if we will run a custom Slackware setup.
We will begin giving away Software Freedom Packs after the stand is set up. We will continue at this location until 2:00 P.M. At this point we will move onto Ashley Valley Community Park and later return to Cobblerock Park at 5:00 P.M. [edit] Ashley Valley Community Park

We had a production problem creating the CDs. That is, we only had a single 12x CD-R drive to make the discs with! On Thursday we created an initial batch of ten Knoppix discs in two-and-one-half hours. Afterwards, we took a break on production until Saturday.
On Saturday we convinced a local computer shop to help us with production. Using its CD burner which ran at 52x, we made eleven complete Software Freedom Day Packs. However we only took ten away with us as the owner requested a Pack for himself!
Since the production schedule was behind and took additional time out of Saturday, when we finished producing SFD Packs it was already late in the day. This, though, did not deter us from our goal! We convinced a local convenience store, "7-11," to hand out SFD Packs. We gave them a quarter of our total number of Packs, and those were quickly gone within two hours. Each person who took a Pack was told to share with friends, family, and colleagues, and to make copies for their associates to give out to their relations.
We will be distributing the remainder of our Packs to local schools, libraries, computer shops, and the public in general. [edit] Lessons Learned
The first thing we need to do next year is have a professional run of CDs! Though the cost may be greater to go this route, it is well worth it to have a large enough number of Packs to satisfy demand. Also, having a separate entity handle the pressing of the CDs frees local SFD members to think up and enact ideas to promote SFD.
The second thing we need to do is start our activities sooner than this time. This year we started in the afternoon; next year we'll need to start in the morning. That will give us sufficient time to set up our materials and displays.
Another problem we had was with the planned demonstration laptop computer. The computer's battery was broken and we were unable to replace it in time for SFD. If we decide to have the demo computer again next year, we will be sure to acquire a properly working unit.
We will also involve the local government next year to help us plan and publicize the event. Though we created a good "buzz" around town on our own, we shall get more involved with the community through the government's connections. This will help get the word out about F/OSS to a larger portion of the populous.
The final problem which we will solve next year is to be more visually noticeable. We started late this year and did not have to worry about this for we traveled the streets to hand out SFD Packs. Next year, though, we will have several "attention-getters" inspired by the other SFD Teams, such as balloons (what a brilliant idea!), a large banner, stuffed toy penguins, a strobe or color-sequenced light, and possibly Team shirts.
