Software Freedom Day 2006 Bazaar – Melbourne Town Hall
Free and Open Source Software enthusiasts will take over the Melbourne Town Hall and city streets for the third annual Software Freedom Day (SFD) on September 16th, 2006
Software Freedom Day is a global event that aims to promote and celebrate the use and benefits of free and open source software such as Linux. “Free and open source software has so many advantages, it's a shame more people don't know about it” said Computerbank Victoria President and organiser, Kylie Davies.
Representatives from Computerbank Victoria, Linux Australia, Linux Users of Victoria, Open Source Victoria, LinuxChix, Melbourne Wireless, Melbourne Perl Mongers, Melbourne Linux Users Group, Indymedia Melbourne, OzZope, the Open Source Developers Club, Community Media Services, Ubuntu-Au, among others will host a free event for people to find out more and get some hands on experience.
The day promises to have something for everyone - Demonstrations, info-stands, a kids zone, screening of the Codebreakers documentary and opportunities to try out free and open source software for yourself.
Business groups such as the WWW Shop, Mitija, Oak Technologies, Perl Training Australia and many more will be on hand to demonstrate how free and open source software can be used to save dollars off IT costs. Davies pointed out that “millions of dollars could be saved by using free and open source software in the government sector alone.”
Guest speakers include Linux Australia's Jon Oxer, WWW Shop's Mark Grey, Community Media Services' Steve Middleton, the Open Source Developers Club's Publicity Officer, Jacinta Richardson and Davies herself.
There will be plenty of free CD giveaways and a competition for the 'best dressed geek.' Davies suggests people bring along their laptops to participate in a world first – the most live Linux laptops in the one place at the one time.
The event starts at 11am and runs until 5pm. The full program is available from Computerbank Victoria's website:http://vic.computerbank.org.au/Members/kylie/sfdbazaar06
