How to Get SUSE Linux for Software Freedom Day
Overview
The following information will explain how you can order SUSE Linux media to distribute at your team's site on Software Freedom Day.
Versions
SUSE Linux is offered as two different distribution types: openSUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise.
openSUSE
Probably the more appropriate distribution from Novell is openSUSE, the free community distribution created by the openSUSE project and sponsored by Novell.
The goals of the openSUSE project are:
- Make SUSE Linux the easiest Linux distribution for anyone to obtain and the most widely used open source platform.
- Provide an environment for open source collaboration that makes SUSE Linux the world's best Linux distribution for new and experienced Linux users.
- Dramatically simplify and open the development and packaging processes to make SUSE Linux the platform of choice for Linux hackers and application developers.
SUSE Linux Enterprise
SUSE Linux Enterprise is the name for Novell's commercial Linux distributions, including SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop. Some participants in Software Freedom Day may enjoy trying SUSE Linux Enterprise to see what it is all about, but in many cases openSUSE be a better distribution for turning people on to the value of Linux and free software.
As a commercial platform, SUSE Linux Enterprise systems are free, but access to Novell's software update service are subscription-based. If you do not subscribe with a valid activation code, SUSE Linux Enterprise has a 60-day trial period for using the update service. After the trial period ends, the only thing that stops working is your system stops receiving ongoing updates from Novell. It is otherwise a 100% fully functional system.
