Software Freedom Day 2007: Melbourne Town Hall |
We had a successful event at the Melbourne Town Hall in the CBD, lots of different people came along and got involved. People from Computerbank, Linux Users of Victoria (LUV), Aussiechix, Apple Users Society of Melbourne (AUSOM), Melbourne Juggling Club, Melbourne Linux Users Group (MLUG), Melbourne PHP Users Group, Melbourne Wireless and more!
In the lead up to the event we had articles in local news papers, were mentioned on RRR radio and had a community service announcement on Channel 31. Our event was also listed on several websites.
Around 200 people attended the event across the day. The juggling out the front helped attract some attention. Inside there were three main areas: kids and education, graphics, office and net, and a community area. many people were surprised at the range of free quality software available. The majority of the computers on display were refurbished computers from Computerbank.
Tux came along to help spruik our event, he was so popular he got mobbed with hugs. Some people enjoyed watching the Codebreakers and other short documentaries. Nicholas from AUSOM produced a really cool FOSS for the Mac CD with a flyer to accompany, around 30 copies were distributed. Linux Users of Victoria (LUV) volunteers handed out 2000 CD's (Ubuntu and the Open CD) in the city and outside the town hall.
A great day for Software Freedom in Melbourne. Many thanks to those who helped make it so.
