Ok, so this the page about our SFD plans and I'll be updating it as and when we have any changes to make. This is our plan as of now.
The Plan:
We'll divide our group into teams of three and each team will visit one school in Jaipur in between the 15th and 27th of September 2008. The teams shall talk about open source and why it is meant for students. Furthermore, the teams shall offer a little bit of career guidance as far as opting for Computer Engineering as a branch is concerned. Make it clear that interest alone will make it work, and nothing else. Also convince students that there is no such thing as a 'better branch' or a 'lower branch'. The idea is to clear a lot of misconceptions among 11th and 12th standard students.
In between the same time duration, we shall conduct sessions related to open source technologies here in our institute and after every such session, there will be a quiz. There will be a set of daily winners for these quizzes from 1st, 2nd and 3rd year each. We can have around 5 such sessions and 5 sets of winners and a final winner depending on the total rankings.
On the 20th of September, 2008, which is Software Freedom Day itself, we shall go to BITS-Pilani which is hosting the Rajasthan Wide Software Freedom Day celebrations and is a collaborative effort of 4 Campus Ambassadors. Mind you, the trip won't be free. Interested students will have to inform us in advance so that we may consider booking a bus for the tour :).
And one important milestone to achieve would be to spread the word of open source within our institution itself. So we shall be doing a lot of publicity work in the coming one week to gather as many students as we can into our group. The primary targets are first and second years.
The Preparations:
Week 1: 8th to 13th September, 2008
Things to do:
1) Coordinator for this objective: Lalith Suresh and Vikram Gaur; 3rd Year Computer Engineering
Inform and spread the word about our group, it's activities and about our plans for SFD which includes the BITS-Pilani trip. The main targets are first years and the 2nd year COMP,IT and ECE students. To achieve this, certain members of the group will be going to the first year lecture halls and selected 2nd year classes to evangelize the idea.
The divisions for this task are:
A Batch: Amlesh and Sarguru, 2nd year IT
B Batch: Gaurav and Naveen, 2nd year Electrical and Computers respectively
C Batch: Ronak and Praveen, 2nd year Computers
D Batch: Richa and Deepak, 2nd year Computers
E Batch: Mohan and Piyush, 2nd year Computers
F Batch: Lalith and Vikram, 3rd year Computers
All teams have to inform the coordinators before you visit any of the first year lecture halls so that if any of us 3rd years are free, we can come along and help you out.
Here are our numbers:
Lalith - +91-9982190365
Vikram- +91-9887257642
- +91-9785957122
2) Coordinators for this objective: Pankaj Kandelwal, Prateek Bansal and Vikram Gaur; 3rd Year Computer Engineering
Visit principals of various schools in Jaipur within the week and try to fix a date and time for conducting our talk in their school in between the 15th and 27th of September. The teams should be able to convince the principals in some way or the other! I shall put up the abstract for this as soon as possible.
Their numbers are:
Pankaj- +91-9828088238
Prateek- +91-9829885997
Vikram - 9785957122
- 9887257642
Week 2 | Week 3: 15th September to 19th September | 22nd to 27th September
Things to do:
1) Sessions + Quizzes:
We'll have sessions and quizzes at the end of the sessions with daily rewards and blah blah blah like we've already mentioned above. The main objective would be to get maximum number of students involved.
2) Talks in schools:
Students will visit schools in groups of three. We'll try to ensure that one team needs to go to only one school during the whole two weeks. Slides and materials will be provided to the teams before hand. We'll even have a little dress rehearsal if you want
The following students have agreed to be the speakers for this objective.

Interested people can mail in their names for the groups. And as far as choosing the teams are concerned, you may ask your friends to come with you. We want a lot of help as far as this venture is concerned.
Yet again, Pankaj Kandelwal, Prateek Bansal and Vikram Gaur will be in charge of this.
Software Freedom Day: 20th September
On the evening or night of the 19th, we'll all proceed to BITS-Pilani for the Rajasthan wide Freedom Day Celebrations (which is on the 20th of September), party hard and come back. Lalith, Pankaj and Prateek will try to arrange for the bus involved. And everyone who wants to turn up for the trip should contribute money from himself. This is not FREE!
What kind of support we need
1) We need more coordinators from 3rd year who're willing to work, so that the burden per head can be reduced!
2) More students from 2nd year to be involved for the evangelizing and publicity part.
3) More speakers for the school visits!
4) More ideas and corrections to the present plan.
