ChristchurchNZ SFD1

ChchSfd1 - wiki posts from Otautahi/Christchurch http://www.softwarefreedomday.org/teams/oceania/nz/christchurch SFD1:

Hi folks, kia ora (welcome) 30-Jul-04

This is a preliminary message to say we're here, Waitaha/Canterbury started.

Related discussion in our local LUG is of FOSS for schools, & ltsp network demos. We're endeavouring to have something of that scale for August 28th. At a minumum, we'll have a site with Linux desktops & FOSS viewable on the day. GNU/Linux Users are working to make this event as large & well-promoted as possible.

Offers of assistance most welcome

Good luck to all the other teams. We'll keep you posted on our progress.

09-Aug-04 update

We have confirmed access to downtown academic facilities for five hours on the 28th. We are now preparing community noticeboard & newspaper advertising, from this outline:

24-Aug-04 update

Posters are going up a lot of places around town - libraries, tertiary institutes, supermarkets, etc. Our SFD advertisements appear in The Press of Saturday 25-Aug p.D3, Wednesday 21-Aug p.B3, and the Buy-Sell-&-Exchange of Friday 27-Aug. We found some commercial sponsors & the advertising bill came to NZ$950. CDs ready (thanks Henrik) - rearing to go!

We'll have two rooms/tutors, 10 PCs a piece - one for Windows & OpenCD, the other for Knoppix & possibly install lessons. Slideshows give FOSS background info in each room. Canterbury Linux Users have been invited to help deal with one-on-one Q&A http://clug.org.nz.

28 August 2004 - Software Freedom Day is here!

11:20am We have 4 tutors & 2 clients making SFD dawn. Thanks Team. Photography started - pix uploaded.. http://sf-day.org/gallery/index.php?gallery=./SFD%202004%20Events/Christchurch (= http://softwarefreedomday.org/gallery/2004/Christchurch )

It turned out to be a great day, with lowish turnout (c20 where we'd prepared for 100) but incredible friendliness, focus, & enthusiasm for the FOSS cause. We'll definitely be there for SFD1. Calling this year's prototype SFD0 would resolve the version number question http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/08/26/0135214&tid=117&tid=109&tid=8&tid=106&tid=218 and also be accurate about the late-notice experience, which we would not have missed for the world. More detail will follow here, but is started on the "Lessons Learned" Team page. Great to meet you all.

Cheers, Rik.
